The Class 158 is a Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) built by the Manufacturer BREL at Derby Works. Constructed between 1989 and 1992 a total of 182 Train sets were built with 30 of those been converted into Class 159's. Currently there are 170 Train sets in operation across the United Kingdom.
The 158's are part of the sprinter family along with the 150's , 155's , 156's , and the 159's. The Class 158's are usually found in the formations of 2 car or 3 car sets. With a maximum speed of 90 mph (140 km/h) the 158's are used a lot in Great Britain.
ScotRail was the first operator of the 158 with a fleet number of 46. Running services from Edinburgh to Glasgow Queen Street Prior to the 170 the 158 was Scotland's main train.

Since the changes in Scottish Railway from First Scotrail to Abellio Scotrail some of the 158's had a makeover to the Saltire Livery.
